Hiring higher DL versions of already known henchmen/hirelings requires a research point. The associated cost is equal to ten times the previous DL’s cost with a max DL of the session number (SN). For example, if you wanted to hire one DL=5 Crossbowmen in session number 5 it would cost (0.05 x 10 x 10 x 10 x 10) = 500gp/day.
